For a four day workweek in the States, it has been incredibly busy around here.

By the numbers; five reviews. A feature interview. One podcast. One podcast appearance. One livestream appearance. Fourteen new listings at Everything Immersive.

Kathryn did a deep dive into Venice VR Expanded this week, appearing on the Voices of VR Critics Roundtable on Kent’s podcast. More on that in the News, along with the Venice VR winners.

Next week is promising to be somewhat as busy: Facebook Connect, more reviews, and maybe even new listing categories. (We’re pondering something. Kathryn, I’m pondering something. — Noah)

Oh, and the Spooky Season guide. Which will hit by the 15th.

Oh, and we’re working on the HERE Online Event in October for badge holders and Patreon backers. So, you know. Damn.

(And that’s not to mention all the News — News. But let’s not. I do enough doomscrolling for all of us.)

ON THE PODCAST THIS WEEK

We’ve been looking forward to this one for a minute: Coach Leanne Pedante and Within’s Jonny Ahdout join host Noah Nelson to talk about Supernatural, the VR fitness service that has been keeping us on our toes all summer.

REVIEWS

This week’s review set cross the spectrum of immersive in its online form at present. From the Larp-like The Homes We Build to the phone-powered intimacy of Candle House Collective’s each and every.

There’s murder mysteries (Murder at River Crossing Book Club) and a one-on-one show that recalls the perspective-changing power of the live version of that kind of experience (Out There). And on top of all that: one of our favorite companies, Optika Moderna, unveiled an experimental production under the auspices of La Jolla Playhouse’s Without Walls.

News From around the Immersiverse

We start in Venice, where the 77th International Film Festival wrapped up this weekend. Along with it: Venice VR Expanded, where the jury “chaired by Céline Tricart and composed of Asif Kapadia and Hideo Kojima,” explored 31 projects in competition and awarded the following three pieces:

the GRAND JURY PRIZE FOR BEST VR IMMERSIVE WORK to:
THE HANGMAN AT HOME — AN IMMERSIVE SINGLE USER EXPERIENCE
by Michelle and Uri Kranot (Denmark, France, Canada)

the BEST VR IMMERSIVE USER EXPERIENCE to:
FINDING PANDORA X
by Kiira Benzing (USA)

the BEST VR IMMERSIVE STORY to:
SHA SI DA MING XING (KILLING A SUPERSTAR)
by Fan Fan (China)

For an in-depth dive into the whole of the Venice VR Expanded catalog look no further than Kent Bye and Voices of VR Critics Roundtable, where our own Executive Editor Kathryn Yu and VR StoriesPola Weiß joined Kent to take on the whole of the catalog.

Staying in the digital realm for a moment, no less than the Royal Shakespeare Company has announced that they are shifting focus to on a hybrid strategy going forward, with brick and mortar productions being just part of the mix. The Times London, specifically The Sunday Times has the story. (Paywall, natch. But some free access is available.)

Shifting from across the Atlantic all the way to the West Coast, LA’s Capital W is returning to live work with their first socially distanced production. Scheduled for next month, and focusing on climate change, we have the scoop on the all-too-appropriately named Fire Season thanks to a Q/A with Capital W’s Monica Miklas and Lauren Ludwig.

Finally, no less than the Knight Foundation took a look at how performing arts organizations are looking to pivot from live to livestream. They spoke with our own Kathryn Yu about the topic.
